Dr Betsy Wieseman, curator for the Dutch and Flemish collection at the National Gallery and ALCS executive committee member, was instrumental in putting together Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and leisure. This exclusive exhibition in the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery will run from 26 June – 8 September 2013 .
Music and musical instruments were a much loved theme in Dutch painting and the instruments or musical scenes invariably carried a metaphorical charge. Music was also used as an indicator of the social or intellectual status of the depicted.
Vermeer and Music is unique in that the exhibition brings together three Vermeer paintings that have never been on display together before. Also, visitors can enjoy regular musical performances of 17th Century pieces performed by the Academy of Ancient Music.
